INSPIRATION podcast and Greenwich Park.

Hello.

It has been a beautiful Autumnal day here in South-East London. The air was crisp and fresh and SE14 was illuminated by bright sunshine.  It would have been sacrilegious to spend such a day holed up in the library, so I took myself and my uni work to Greenwich Park.

If you haven’t been, Greenwich Park is one of the loveliest parks in London. It is perfect for hearty strolls, teaching kids to ride bikes, romantic liaisons, chasing squirrels and sitting down with a good book. If you explore thoroughly enough there are deer and a lake, but my favourite bit is the top of the hill, from where you can stand and see one of the best views in London; on a clear day right over the City.

Today I sat under a tree and read the book I am currently studying (Franz Kafka – The Trial), breaking off now and then to enjoy my surroundings and people-watch, staying until I could see the sun setting over the City.

I then wandered down to the National Maritime Museum, which has had a makeover recently, and now has a wonderful shop (museum shops are the best – I bought myself an astronomy t shirt with all the constellations on – super cool) and a nice, family-friendly cafe. I didn’t spend much time in the actual museum if truth be told.

I listened to this song over and over and over.

And also, Simon and Garfunkel. I watched a very good documentary about them on the BBC recently, and it’s given me a new appreciation of them…watch it here if you like, I really recommend it even if you are only a casual fan, it was very interesting: Imagine, Simon and Garfunkel – The Harmony Game

Autumn.

Helloo everyone.

It’s the second of November already, and it feels so weird, because seems just yesterday it was summer, July and August, heat, rush, nervousness about the new university year, etc. I don’t know why, but have never liked summer. Always have associated it with apathy, hating the heat and wanting to stay indoors, while ‘everyone probably’ is having much more fun. Yeah, I sound like such an optimistic person, sorry dear reader, and double sorry if you are a hardcore summer fanatic too. Think have always liked Autumn and Winter the most since I remember myself. At home, in Latvia, I live next to two parks with old big trees, and it’s always so beautiful when leaves change colors, or when it’s snowy, the trees are holding piles of snow, the parks looks like fairytales. Everything always looks so atmospheric, the colour changes, the quiet winds, cold, dark sky, it always makes me so happy when am at home, the park trees stand there as they have since I’ve lived there. Makes always rethink of the things that are happening and that seem so important at that current moment, how maybe silly the worries or anything is, etc. Silly.:) (very tired Agnese’s blabberings)!

So love this song, they played it as the first song at Bestival this year, it was so beautiful, always reminds of autumn as well. I don’t know, is it only me, but Autumn makes me want to listen to very dreamy music? Watch dreamy films, read dreamy books, drink tea and be sad and happy and sad and happy. I wish my mood wouldn’t change so much, one minute I want peace and quietness, in other, wish would be travelling, etc.

After last weeks Glitter theme, I think this week we will be having ‘Dreams’ theme on our show. Think dreamy, autumny films – Sofia Coppola (<3333333) haha:

and of course:

Or if you have patience, check out Tarkovskii’s ‘Solaris’ it’s very long, but great for autumn:

Talking about Virgin Suicides film, also one of my favourite blogs: http://www.thestylerookie.com/ writes much about dreamy, teeny, pastel things. I just want to be Tavi! So beautiful and so inspirational. I think I’m going through the post teenage years, when I want to dress up school girly type, with pleated skirts, blouses. Maybe I am just compensating that as I wasn’t really a girly girl in high school, never wore any skirt/dresses/girly stuff lol.

Anyway, this blog entry has turned into a very long rambling about autumn and my personal experiences :D, sorry! Me and Issi we will try to make a very nice program for Thursday’s show. Please listen to it and let us know what you’re thinking. 🙂

Okies, good night everyone and we will keep updating everything.

P.S. and a niiiiiice dreamy, autumny song 😀

Much love,

Ag xxx

Update

/Agnese.

Hello, hello, hello.

After quite a long time of not updating anything in here, have finally decided to write something here. You know, when you’re too woried about various stuff + essays + exam preparations + loads of stress + anxiety = too ‘full’ head of concerns,  you can’t write anything, or think about anything else apart of the problems, feel miserable and just want to hide away from everyone.  Hopefully don’t know the feeling (but can understand the point). Anyway, now, when looks that there might be a hope of sorting out stuff and life, can write a little life update.

The first and the most important thing is:

‘CATS ON TOAST’ WON THE AWARD FOR THE BEST RADIO SHOW AT GOLDSMITHS UNIVERSITY OF LONDON !!!

Me and Issi were and are so happy and proud!

Like who would have thought that our giggly, not serious, talking nonsense and playing odd mix of songs would win an award! 😀

Thank you so much everyone who voted for us! It means so much to us and hopefully we will be able to continiue ‘Cats on Toast’ also next year!

Looking back to how we started the show, I think it was a mix of us trying to have fun and gain experience. I personally just wanted to do random ridiculous stuff, have nonsense themes and ‘weird’ music – to like have something that wouldn’t need  explanations, but would be just fun thing to do. Like the most important to me was to have fun with the show, nothing else. And thinking back now, I think it was quite cool that our ‘Cats on Toast’ wasn’t too serious. Hopefully if you listened, you had fun and the show made you relaxed.:)

issi and me slightly drunk at the awards. Slipgoldsmiths nominated us also for being ‘the most wasted at student awards’ haha. http://slipgoldsmiths.wordpress.com/2011/03/24/2011-student-awards-results/ [more on awards]

and our awesome award! 😀 So cool!! 😀

Big, big, big thanks to everyone again for listening our babbling and hope you had some good time listening!! :)))

Other exciting thing is:  This blog now is also featured on Goldsmiths blog page!!! Wohoo!! 😀 http://www.gold.ac.uk/student/blogs/

Scroll scroll and there we are! 😀 Might look a bit weird with our picture being the only with cats ears and stuff haha. And I am a bit (QUITE) embarassed of what I wrote in my answers to the questions,  sound so cliche, should have thought more on what I write as always meh!

But once again, we are so proud and happy that Goldsmiths and the people who listened approve our blog and show, means a lot to us, we are so happy to have a good feedback!:)) Feels like we have contributed something to goldsmiths!:D

Some pictures of our time with ‘Cats on Toast’:

and our one and only guest we had:D I’m sure you shouldn’t ever play ball at so small studio with expensive equipment, etc, etc 😀

hi, Annette! 😀

Also, what was our secret of having random ‘Meow meow’  sounds during the times, when we got a bit bored? It’s here! http://meowmania.jqln.org/

And also, we want to say thanks to Kelly and Alannah for creating jingle http://www.myspace.com/mulledice/music/songs/CoT-jingle-short-attempt-sans-wine-mp3-77411083 wohoo! 😀

Other thing that was so exciting was poster making! During the time I heard lots of people noticing the posters and questioning why they have such particular pictures! 😀

our first baby poster

as you can see, my paint skills were in full when i made them! 😀

Okii, I’ll finish now talking about our show, but thank you for the third time in this post to everyone who spared time to check ‘Cats on Toast’! 🙂

////////////////////////////////////////////////////

What happened in my life that was quite exciting —- I turned 21. 21.  21! I know – so old, such a big number. I still feel like an imature child, trying to get away from anything that is with responsibilities etc. Guess have to change that soon. :[ But 21. Such a huge number.  Had rather nice birthday celebration, at Greenwich park, with cake and drinks and nice people. Couldn’t afford to do anything more, but was so sweet and felt and feel so grateful and thankful for everyone who congratulated and remembered me. Means lot to me, especially if I have been so moody and unsociable recently because of my problems. Was nice and won’t forget.:) The nicest birthday suprise was the ticket to Toro Y Moi gig (I am lame and so obsessed now with ‘Underneath The Pine’ album)! Thank you all the lovelies for remembering me.:]

Some of the things I like at the moment:

…Always and forever ^

***
pavasarī pēc pulksten desmitiem ziemā daudz ātrāk
debesis dievam a3 lapa

dievu vairs neredz

6 music, grumpy people, libraries, early mornings.

Okii, will stop my ramblings here and will go back to essays. 😀 Good luck with essays and exams everyone!

Much love x

p.s. new harry potter trailer!!

Just a couple of kooks.

Greetings.

Have some Bowie.

This week the theme of our show was NATURE, because being (sort of) country girls we love a bit of nature. We discussed our favourite natural places and tried to think of a few in London too, and of course played some groovy (and some questionable) music. I shall intersperse this post with some of my photos of lovely nature in Bath.

Baby Cow

I love baby cows

I *think* I have managed to upload the recording of the show to Megaupload, so you can click the link and download it if you missed us this week (for free of course!)

BESTY COASTYY!

Issi

Hello, Cats on Toast readers. I am writing to you from a self-imposed (and snowy) pit of despair.

You may remember I wrote a post bemoaning my abundance of essays (https://catsontoast.wordpress.com/2010/11/23/my-face-when/ ) …well, I still haven’t done them. I’ve tried, and I’ve done a little, but then I’ve got distracted. Or procrastinated. (the list of things I have done this week as procrastination includes: baking cakes; cleaning my room; doing all the washing from under my bed; unblocking the kitchen sink; writing this blog)

For some reason I am hitting essay writer’s block. As I’m sitting here, I am swigging from a bottle of wine (Sainsburys own brand dry white wine, top notch) and inhaling the fumes from my big ‘Cleansing and Stimulating‘ aromatherapy candle, trying to get my head in order. Doing this I feel a bit like a proper bohemian writer person. I quite like it.

So anyway, myself and Agnese along with my lovely housemate Kelly, went to see kitty-tastic Best Coast last night.

Apart from having one of the cutest album covers I’ve seen in…well, ever, (featuring Snacks the cat!) they have made some gorgeous surfy, bittersweet pop songs, which I have been singing along to around the house for weeks.

This is my favourite song of theirs, Boyfriend (‘I wish he was my boyfrieeeeeend…I’d love him to the very end but instead he’s just a friend’) Think lovesick teen yearning. You will be singing it around your house too.

They played at the Scala, with Spectrals opening for them. I enjoyed Spectrals set. They reminded me a bit of a young Ash, but as heard through a distorted dream-haze; with shades of Badly Drawn Boy thrown in too. They played well and made  pleasant noise, but were not hugely exciting. They did however seem very young (in reality probably my age) and I think have potential to get a lot better. We chatted to them briefly after the gig (mainly in the hope of setting up one of our party with the hot keyboard player – unfortunately not visible in my picture!) and they seemed friendly chaps.

Above is one of my photos from the gig, and here is a really pretty video for their song, Peppermint.

We were all really excited for Best Coast, especially as like myself and Kelly, Bethany from Best Coast is GLUTEN-FREE!! (for those of you who don’t know what this is, Google ‘Coeliac Disease’!) She is our gluten-free idol. We tried to do a gluten-free shout out to her in a quiet moment during the gig…she did not acknowledge us and it was excruciatingly failsome. But anyway, she was a very cool front-woman, with a great voice and style, and the band played all our favourite songs; Boyfriend, Crazy for You, When I’m With You etc.

While they played well together and it was nice to hear the songs live, unfortunately for me they didn’t quite live up to my expectations. They didn’t have that spark of something really special, and after a while their songs all started to sound the same, and I found myself thinking of shopping lists.

I think I would give the gig as a whole 6.5/10. I was hoping it would be more of an 8/10! But there you go. I still really enjoy their album, and it’s WELL cheap at the moment on the Wichita records website (£5 in the Christmas sale!) so maybe a nice Christmas present for someone / yourself.

A bunch of other stuff happened that night, including us finding the ACTUAL Platform 9 and 3/4s from  Harry Potter (pictures to possibly follow?!) and unfortunately also a threatening nutter on the tube and a scary guy mugging Kelly as we were walking home in New Cross. I’d like to take this opportunity to send out a massive FUCK YOU to that guy. And I hope whatever he bought with KELLY’S money injured or caused him pain in some way.

Anyway this has turned into a mammoth blog post. I think the word count is higher than for any of my essays, LOL.

TTFN, love Issi xxx
